BETA Business Awards 2012



Iron Horse Equestrian Supplies based in Moss, Doncaster were winners for the 3rd consecutive year in the Small Retailer Category at the 2012 BETA Business Awards. The coveted industry accolades were presented to winning individuals and companies at the British Equestrian Trade Association’s Gala Dinner, at the National Motorcycle Museum, near Birmingham, on 19 February.


This award is divided into four categories – large, medium, small and mail order/Internet retailers. It is presented to those retailers that offer outstanding customer service. Final judging took suppliers’ votes into account, as well as visits by mystery shoppers. The award received more than 4,000 nominations for over 300 companies.

Small Retailer

Winner: Iron Horse Equestrian Supplies, Doncaster, South Yorkshire

This is the third time that Iron Horse Equestrian Supplies has won this award. It was described as a “great shopping experience” and a judge added: “They were attentive, but not pushy, and really knew their stock.”

The store was praised for its good choice of quality products and wonderful service. “The store was full, but organised and tidy,” added a judge.

Packed with personality and idyllically situated in rural north Doncaster, trading from a tastefully converted stone built cattle barn sporting the ‘Iron Horse’ above the entrance, the saddlery was set up by Jean & Roy Waterworth along with Daughter Vanessa Townsend (a keen amateur Show jumper, riding from the age of 3) in 2004 and is still growing & expanding in many different areas. During the summer of 2011 they doubled their sales area; Vanessa Townsend says “We work extremely hard to offer a choice and variety of products for all disciplines & budgets. We cater for everyone from the ‘Professional Rider’ to the ‘Country Dog Walker’ and more recently moving into the ‘Shooting’ area selling shooting wear & shotgun cartridges”

Jean Waterworth, who has worked in all aspects of retail, says “We believe that all our customers should receive a one to one personal shopping experience, we have the right foundation and knowledge to assist our customers and a desire to go beyond the job role; we are passionate and enthusiastic with the right attitude to deliver excellent customer service. We do our upmost to go that extra mile!”
